Potter Anderson Serves as Qualcomm's Delaware Counsel

September 1, 2008

Potter Anderson partners Richard L. Horwitz, Mathew E. Fischer and Brian C. Ralston served as Delaware counsel to Qualcomm in a long-contested battle between Qualcomm Incorporated and Nokia Corporation involving IP licensing, royalty and infringement issues. The dispute was watched closely by all in the telecommunications business as well as the financial markets.  The dispute began in October 2005 when several telecom companies filed antitrust complaints with the European Commission challenging Qualcomm's royalty rates.  Subsequently, Qualcomm sued Nokia in various U.S. and foreign courts and before the ITC, alleging patent infringement, and licensing litigation was brought in the Court of Chancery.  The global settlement of the disputes—all arbitrations and litigation—came the day trial was to begin in Delaware.
