U.S. natural gas producers Chesapeake Energy and Southwestern Energy have agreed to merge through an all-stock transaction valued at $7.4 billion, in a deal that will create a $24 billion natural gas powerhouse and the nation's largest producer of the critical energy source. 

The combined company, which will take on a new, undisclosed name after closing, will have an enterprise value of approximately $24 billion based on the agreed upon exchange ratio — of 0.0867 shares of Chesapeake common stock for each share of Southwestern common stock — and the companies' respective share prices on Jan. 10, the companies said in a statement. The deal stands to create the largest natural gas producer in the U.S.,
