Law360 (September 30, 2026, 4:00 PM EDT) -- Delaware powerhouse Potter Anderson & Corroon LLP is marking its 200th year in business, a year spent representing famous names and corporate giants like Nikola, Bally's, Pfizer and SiriusXM in matters ranging from bankruptcies to patents to corporate disputes.
The firm's long tradition of large corporate cases has once again made it stand out as one of Law360's Delaware Powerhouses.
"We've got a lot of experience. We've been doing this a long time," said T. Brad Davey, chair of the firm's corporate litigation group.
The firm is Delaware-focused, with all 102 of its attorneys working from its sole office in Wilmington. While Potter Anderson's 1826 founding makes it one of the 10 oldest firms in the U.S., chair Peter Walsh Jr. said it takes pride in its ability to evolve and change, for example by using artificial intelligence — cautiously, with safeguards and checks — to reduce costs for clients.
"The last thing we want to be perceived as is as a stuffy old firm," he said.
As a Delaware firm, Potter Anderson naturally finds itself representing corporate clients in the First State's Chancery Court, with business there strong enough that Walsh said they're turning away cases.
Its Chancery work over the last year has included representing drugmaker Pfizer in litigation relating to its $10 billion acquisition of Metsera, defending technology company The Trade Desk against a challenge to a multibillion-dollar founder equity compensation grant and representing several Bally's Corp. directors in challenging Standard General's $4.6 billion acquisition of Bally's in 2025.
"We're probably one of the top firms, the go-to firms for Chancery work," Walsh said.
He said Potter Anderson's advantage is its experience with the court's judges and their more "collegial" and "flexible" style.
"I think we give very good advice, specialized advice about the judges and the Court of Chancery," Walsh said.
The firm also has a strong transactional process, over the past year representing Civitas Resources in its $12.8 billion all-stock merger with SM Energy, serving as Delaware counsel to Liberty Broadband Corp. in its $17 billion all-stock acquisition by Charter Communications, and acting as counsel to Liberty Media Corp. in the $10 billion spinoff of Liberty Live Holdings, which includes its interests in Live Nation and Ticketmaster.
Davey said one of the firm's strengths in this field has been its ability to call on the expertise of its attorneys in the litigation practice.
"We have a lot of folks who know how the transactions are supposed to work," he said.
Potter Anderson also works in other legal areas, over the past year representing electric vehicle maker Nikola in its $1 billion Chapter 11 and creditors in the bankruptcies of trucking giant Yellow Corp., Mexican payday lender Credito Real and home goods retailer At Home Group; winning victories for artificial intelligence developer C3.ai in a trade secrets case and broadcaster SiriusXM in a patent dispute; and representing the developer of a $75 million student housing project for the University of Delaware.
Davey called Potter Anderson's 200-year lifespan "astounding."
"It's a testament to generations and generations of firm leaders. It's also a testament to the strength of the Delaware practice and the Delaware bar," he said.
"The firm has been successful for so long I think every generation that comes through feels it is the institution," Walsh said.
