Potter Anderson Secures $23.3 Million Jury Verdict for C3.ai in Major Trade Secret Case
Potter Anderson secured a major trial victory on behalf of firm client C3.ai, Inc., obtaining a $23.3 million jury verdict after a seven‑day trial. The jury unanimously found that Cummins had misappropriated C3.ai’s trade secrets and breached its contractual obligations, a result that brings to a close over two and a half years of hard‑fought litigation.
The case centered on C3.ai’s enterprise AI technology, which Cummins accessed under a license agreement. Evidence at trial showed that Cummins used that access to study C3.ai’s proprietary fuel-economy optimization application and replicate key components of that technology. As C3.ai explained to the jury, Cummins carried out a coordinated effort to copy C3’s application and rebuild it internally.
The unanimous verdicts on both trade secret misappropriation and breach of contract fully vindicate C3.ai’s position and underscore the company’s commitment to protecting the core technology that powers its enterprise AI platform.
John Sensing, along with co-counsel Crowell & Moring, represented C3.ai.
