Civil Courts in the Aftermath of a Global Pandemic: Enhancements or Distractions?
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck the United States, the country came to a stand-still and all non-essential businesses were forced to operate remotely, including the civil court system. Since March of 2020, courts across the country have been instructed to proceed online, when possible, to prevent further backlog. Although there was no "one size fits all" approach, many courts adopted the same or similar measures. Now, nearly four years later, many of these measures have a permanent place in the civil litigation process; attorneys and judges found that the emergent initiatives have enhanced the outcome of cases. While this may be true, these now-preferred practices are not without a cost. Are they actually as beneficial as they seem?
